Species List, Northern California

We've been hosting a Wild Mushroom Retreat for the past 16 years at our ranch in the Klamath Mts., Northern California, and have kept a running species list. I just posted it on our website, in case anyone's interested in checking it out: http://www.sandybar.com/Workshops.html along with a description of our Wild Mushroom Retreat. We're currently at 215 species, listed by Latin & common name, I'm in the process of listing families, but it's still a work in progress. It's the work of several amateur, but dedicated, taxonomists who have been attending the retreat for many years. Let me know if you have any questions.
Forum: Mushroom Hunting Discussion

In my new yard.

I am new at this and have found this shrooming thing to be very fun and interesting. My son and I started when we found some Bolettus mushrooms on a golf course that resembeled the dancing ones from Fantasia. Being the first time ever touching mushrooms to possibily eat, the 15 or so really nice ones harvested we did not eat do to being skeptical. I am perty sure those were some good shrooms we passed up on. Since then I have been going aroung the back yard forest area to see if I can find some edible mushrooms. I have found some names and others I have not. Hope you like the pictures and help identify if any are edible.

Forum: Mushroom Photography

wood ears in michigan?

Found this one today. It looks like the chinese version of a wood ear(auricula polytricha) that I've bought dried at chinese groceries for years, but never found it wild. Didn't think it grew wild here...

Closest match i can find in Arora's mushrooms demystified is auricularia auricula,(or possibly tremella foliacea?) but it seems to be larger and more lobed than the any descriptions or pictures i've found of a. auricula.

Anybody have any experience with this mushroom in the midwest or eastern us?

Forum: Mushroom Hunting Discussion

SE michigan unidentified coral? Identified!

I found this mushroom in soil in the middle of a patch of chanterelles, in oak/hickory forest. It's been very damp lately, rain for days.

It's around 3 inches tall, off white, and hollow in the middle. The fruit body is folded and lobed, almost brainlike. It's hollow, walls about 1/8 inch thick. The texture is firm, flexible and rubbery, like cooked egg whites.
Odor mild, slightly sweetish and musty.
Essentially flavorless.

At first i thought i might have a cauliflower mushroom, but the tips don't have the same kind of leafy wrinkles typical of the pictures i've seen of the cauliflower. It sort of looks like a cross between a gyromitra esculenta, and a coral.

Has anybody ever seen anything like this? Could it be an earlier stage of a cauliflower or something?

Any help would be appreciated, this one's got me baffled.
Thanks, Zack

Forum: Mushroom Hunting Discussion

Interesting amanita found in southern michigan

Yesterday i found an amanita that i can't positively identify.

Cap is red-orange in the middle, fading to yellow orange at the outer edge. apx 3 inches diameter

gills: white to creamy white

Spore print: white

Universal veil, light yellow, leaving a small number of scales on the cap.

stipe: about 3 inches tall, 1/2" dia. white, with a dusting of yellow on the surface, thin wispy ring, also light yellow.

At first i thought i had found a caesars amanita, but the yellow universal veil and annulus throws it off. It also doesn't have yellow gills. The western A. Aspera sounds like a close match, but i don't know if it occurs in michigan.

Any ideas?

Will post pictures soon, but they won't be great, i didn't have a camera with me when i found it, it's a little beat up now...

Forum: Mushroom Hunting Discussion
